What is Pain Management Physiotherapy?
Pain management physiotherapy in Pointe-Claire focuses on helping individuals living with persistent or chronic pain understand the mechanisms of pain and develop strategies to manage it effectively. Unlike acute pain (which signals tissue damage), chronic pain often persists beyond normal healing times and involves changes in the nervous system, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. Our bio-psycho-social approach addresses all these factors—not just physical symptoms—to empower you to take control of your pain and move toward a life without constant therapy dependence.

Our Pain Management Approach in Pointe-Claire
Our pain management physiotherapy program uses the bio-psycho-social model of pain—recognizing that chronic pain involves biological, psychological, and social factors. Lesley Singer combines pain neuroscience education, graded movement therapy, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and self-management tools to help you understand your pain differently and develop lasting strategies for managing it. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate pain, but to reduce its impact on your life and restore function, confidence, and quality of life.
Pain Neuroscience Education
Understanding how pain works changes everything. We teach you about the nervous system, pain mechanisms, and why chronic pain persists—helping reduce fear, change unhelpful beliefs, and empower you to take control of your recovery.
Graded Movement & Activity
We develop personalized, gradual exposure to movement and activity—challenging pain-related fear while building confidence and function. This isn't about pushing through pain; it's about smart, progressive re-engagement with meaningful activities.
Pacing & Energy Management
Learning to balance activity and rest prevents boom-bust cycles that worsen chronic pain. We teach sustainable pacing strategies so you can do more of what matters without triggering painful flare-ups.
Self-Management Tools
The ultimate goal is independence—not lifelong therapy. We equip you with cognitive-behavioral strategies, relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene, stress management, and problem-solving skills to manage your pain long-term.

Pain Neuroscience Education: Understanding Changes Everything
Pain neuroscience education is a cornerstone of our pain management physiotherapy approach in Pointe-Claire. Research shows that understanding how pain works—including how the nervous system processes danger signals, how pain can persist even after tissues heal, and how thoughts, emotions, and context influence pain—reduces fear, changes unhelpful beliefs, and improves outcomes. When you understand that chronic pain doesn't always mean ongoing damage, you can approach movement and activity differently, breaking the pain-fear-avoidance cycle that maintains persistent pain.
Chronic Back Pain Management in Pointe-Claire
Chronic back pain is one of the most common persistent pain conditions affecting West Island residents. Our pain management physiotherapy approach addresses not just physical factors but also the fear, beliefs, and behaviors that maintain chronic back pain. Through pain neuroscience education, graded movement exposure, and pacing strategies, we help you break the cycle of boom-bust activity patterns and recurrent pain flare-ups. Whether you've had back pain for months or years, our evidence-based approach can help you regain confidence and function.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pain Management Physiotherapy
Can pain management physiotherapy eliminate my chronic pain?
The goal of pain management physiotherapy is not necessarily to eliminate pain, but to reduce its impact on your life and improve your function, confidence, and quality of life. Many people experience significant pain reduction through our program, but the focus is on developing effective self-management strategies regardless of pain levels. You'll learn to do more of what matters to you, even if some pain persists.
How long does pain management physiotherapy take?
Pain management physiotherapy typically involves 6-12 sessions over several months, though this varies based on your goals and progress. Unlike traditional physiotherapy that you "complete," pain management focuses on building skills you'll use long-term. Lesley works collaboratively with you to develop a plan that fits your needs and gradually transitions you toward independent pain self-management.
How is this different from regular physiotherapy?
Regular physiotherapy often focuses on tissue-based problems and hands-on treatment. Pain management physiotherapy addresses chronic pain differently—recognizing that persistent pain involves nervous system changes, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The emphasis is on education, changing beliefs, building self-management skills, and graded activity rather than passive treatments. You become the expert in managing your own pain.
Do I need a referral for pain management physiotherapy?
No referral is required to book pain management physiotherapy at our Pointe-Claire clinic. However, we work best as part of your broader healthcare team. It's helpful if you continue seeing your physician or pain specialist alongside physiotherapy for comprehensive chronic pain management.
Is pain management physiotherapy covered by insurance?
Most private insurance plans in Quebec cover physiotherapy services, including pain management. Check your policy for physiotherapy coverage limits. Keep all receipts for claims. We provide detailed statements for insurance reimbursement.
Will I still need pain medication?
Pain medication decisions should be made with your prescribing physician. Pain management physiotherapy can help reduce medication reliance for some people, but we never advise changing medications without medical consultation. Our goal is to give you additional tools to manage your chronic pain—not replace necessary medical treatments.
Is tele therapy as effective as in-person treatment?
For pain management physiotherapy, tele therapy can be highly effective. Much of our work involves education, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and discussing activity pacing—all of which translate well to virtual sessions. Lesley offers tele therapy for West Island residents with mobility limitations or travel challenges. Contact reception to discuss whether virtual pain management is right for you.
